A very big Thank You to Oliver of the NewJazz channel!
A very big THANK YOU! I first have to thank Oliver Prehn of the NewJazz YouTube channel for teaching this concept on piano. To paraphrase Oliver, "This is a simple way to improvise thrilling [jazz] music." I would like to point out right away that this works for much more than jazz. It works with the majority of popular music of all genres so long as they are based on the major scale pattern of W, W, H, W, W, W, H. I learned from Oliver that if you experience the modes as they sound from light to dark, this way of hearing the modes makes much more intuitive sense. This guide is centered on the traditional order of modes as they are laid out on the guitar fretboard so well. I encourage you to watch Oliver's explanation. Also, Oliver extends the concept beyond the standard modes and creates new un-named sounds. This is quite natural on the piano and sounds amazing. It is really worth it to hear the modes in this way. I made no attempt to translate these concepts here in this guide to keep focused on the natural way the fretboard is organized. You are encouraged to experiment for yourself after going through this guide. Oliver's video is titled:
THE MODES: a Basic Introduction with a Crazy Continuation...
